Section 6.1
1. Why does your body need nutrients?
Your body needs to nutrients to supply the energy and the materials your body needs to grow and survive.
2. What are the six different groups of nutrients we have learned about in this chapter?
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins, and water.
Section 6.2
3. What unit is used to measure to food energy?
Food energy is measured in kilojoules.
4. What are the two main types of carbohydrates and how are they different?
The two main types of carbohydrates are simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are made up of relatively small, simple molecules called sugars. Complex carbohydrates consists of larger molecules which are actually many sugar molecules joined together.
5. Starch and glycogen are complex carbohydrates.
a. From what foods do starch and glycogen come from?
Starch comes from plants and glycogen comes from animal products.
b. What two things can happen to glucose in your body?
Glucose can be used for energy in your body or changed to glycogen and stored for future use.
6. Fats are an important source of energy for your body
a. What are the building blocks of fats?
Fatty acids are the building blocks of fat.
b. What are the two types of fats?
The two types of fats are saturated and unsaturated fats.

7. Proteins are essential in building and repairing cells
a. What are the building blocks of proteins?
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.
b. How many different non-essential amino acids and essential amino acids are there?
There are 12 non-essential amino acids and 8 essential amino acids.
c. What happens to the proteins used by your body? There are two outcomes.
Proteins are broken down into amino acids. These amino acids are used to make proteins your body needs or are used for energy if glucose or fatty acid molecules are not available.

8. Calcium and iron are two important minerals your body uses.
a. How does calcium help your body and what vitamin helps it get absorbed?
Calcium helps form teeth and bones and vitamin D helps it get absorbed into your body.
b. How does iron help your body what is a good source of iron?
Iron helps red blood cells carry oxygen and meat is a good source of iron.
9. Describe the difference between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins.
Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed along with fat. Fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in your body. Water-soluble vitamins are dissolved in water.

10. What are the functions of water in the human body?
Water transports nutrients and wastes. Water is required for the chemical reactions that occur in your body. Water appears as sweat to cool down your body. Water is a lubricant for joints. Water helps you digest by allowing you to swallow more easily.
Section 6.6
11. What is the purpose of fibre in your diet?
Fibre holds on to water and leaves your body along with feces. Fibre keeps feces moist and prevents or relieves constipation.
Section 6.7
12. Describe the difference between a food that is fortified with nutrients and a food that is enriched with nutrients.
A food that is fortified contains nutrients that are not normally present. A food that is enriched with nutrients increases the amount of a nutrient that is already present.

13. Using the Canada Food Guide on p. 127, create a meal plan that contains the right amount of servings needed by a person 15 years old. Your meal plan should contain meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
